Alev, 34, is a pre-school teacher at Mariposa Montessori School and her husband Taylan, 36, is an Advertising Research Lead at Google. As their birthdays are few days apart, they usually celebrate it together. Each year, they enjoy a casual gathering with their loved ones to celebrate their new age. But this year, they stepped out of their traditional celebration and decided to make a change. They asked their families, friends and colleagues to donate for a cause they truly believe in – education. Together, they raised $6,040 to support underprivileged children.
Why did you decide to give up on your birthdays?
We are fortunate enough to have the basic necessities in life. We don’t need much more than that. All the money that would have been spent for us would have more impact in the lives of our less fortunate friends in Turkey. Also, buying a gift for somebody is stressful and gift cards don’t have much emotional value attached to them. A fundraiser does save our friends from the trouble of finding the ‘right’ gift.
Why did you pick education to make an impact?
Education is not a luxury, but the right of every single human being. If governments and our votes don’t change this fact, then our contributions should at least make a change in the lives of others.
Why did you choose TPF to realize this project?
We had the privilege to meet with TPF’s founder, Haldun Tashman and the CEO, Ilhan Akbil – both amazingly inspirational figures. As we learned more about what TPF stands for and the rigor behind how the charity dollars are spent, we didn’t hesitate.
What was your birthday wish this year?
Be more peaceful with people and within ourselves. Share more with others.
What’s your favorite birthday cake?
Strawberry shortcake.
What was the best birthday gift you ever received?
This one by far. Our friends helped us with the opportunity to give a chance in life for others.
We couldn’t be more delighted that Alev and Taylan chose TPF for their heartwarming mission. Alev and Taylan are planning to give up all of their future birthdays and hope to set an example for everyone. “If we can raise 6K in one event imagine how much we can raise together if all of our friends channel their birthday gifts towards this good cause!,” noted Taylan. What a wonderful way to put TPF’s motto into action: “Making a difference one philanthropist at a time!”
Once again, Happy Birthday Alev and Taylan! We wish you many happy returns!
