Tarlabasi, a neighborhood in the middle of Istanbul, is a community with many societal challenges from migration to conflicting ethnic group identities and to limited opportunities for girls and women due to the conservative structure of the society. Tarlabasi Community Center serves to address these problems. Many children and women are forced to leave school to work and are subjected to violence, even drugs. Many of them suffer social exclusion as they are unable to participate effectively in economic, social and cultural life of the mainstream society. Tarlabasi Community Center primarily is concerned with this problematic relationship of the individuals and the society, in large; and the dynamics of that relationship. The organization works to remove the socially generated barriers so that especially, children and women have the ability to interact with society in a positive way. Their programs range from empowering disadvantaged people to creating therapy workshops for children. We are happy to be partnering with TCC to help them advance their propelling mission.
