Turmoil in Turkey, It’s a Women’s Thing

Women in the World Foundation recently published an article on women’s role in the protests in Turkey. The piece compared the protests in Istanbul to Tahir Square, stating 51 percent of the Turkish protesters are women, whereas only 10 to 15 percent were women in Egypt. It went on to state that Gezi Park is symbolic, as it is known to be relatively unsafe for women at night. Women are also fighting to change that issue, saying ‘you should be able to safely walk around at night and be able to claim the park, the street, all the public spaces’.

“I think this will start and leave area for us, for democracy, for cultural participation in Turkey, for women and young people,” a female protestor stated.
