Hatay is one of the top three cities most impacted by the disaster that hit Southeast Turkey on February 6th, 2023. That day changed the lives of millions, as the majority of the city collapsed into dust, leaving inhabitants without shelter, essential needs to exist in dignity, and jobs.
In the midst of this desolation, a group emerged. They are the ones who could have left but chose to stay. Their goal was not just to help their neighbors but to heal the wounds inflicted by the disaster and bring back their hometown to its past glory days. Buradayız Hatay (‘We Are Here, Hatay’) became the epitome of resilience in the city.
Formed by locals who personally endured the earthquake’s impact, Buradayız Hatay was born out of shared loss – loss of family, homes, and a sense of normalcy. Despite the overwhelming destruction, this team committed to rebuilding their city. Experiencing the needs firsthand, they accurately identified critical areas for assistance, including safe spaces, job opportunities, education, psychosocial support, and childcare. They established a grassroots organization, quickly becoming a powerful force for good, initiating impactful projects to support the remaining residents of Hatay. Their efforts, proudly supported by TPF, exemplify the enduring spirit and commitment to a hopeful future in the region.
