What do you mean when you say, “personalized philanthropy?”
What all donors have in common is their desire to make a long-term impact and that means something different to everyone. TPF’s professional staff works to understand each donor’s individual goals and recommends the best avenues to meet them. We connect you with organizations with years of experience to evaluate the need and match funds with impact.
I’m not sure I want to give just yet – I’m not sure where I want my donations to go.
We encourage donors to “give while you live” and experience the joy of seeing the impact you make. That’s why TPF offers donors a wide range of philanthropic vehicles through which to make their contributions. Our professional staff works directly with you to understand your passion,
motivations and desires to help and connect you with dozens of organizations we work with to make your philanthropic dreams a reality.
How can I be sure my money will go to the intended projects?
We work directly with over 56 partners – from universities to community foundations and NGOs – which we have directly reviewed and vetted through our partner process. We conduct regular reviews and provide reports to our donors so they know exactly what is being done with their money. We also do site visits twice a year.
Is there a minimum donation amount?
You can contribute any amount to causes supported through TPF. Smaller contributions can be made online. With a gift of $5,000 or more, you may set up the fund in your or your family’s name or anonymously.
I’m young and don’t have much money. How can I get involved?
There are many ways and we strongly encourage young people to get involved. TPF’s Young Professionals program is focused on the needs and aspirations of next-generation donors. Since 2014 this group has given more than $100,000 to support TPF Stars Program, a project that provides four years of financial support for girls attending high school in Turkey and who now have gone on to college. This is a great example of TPF’s values and mission in action – creating more impact through a community-based approach for donors and grantees.
What kinds of funds are available?
TPF offers a range of fund types:
- Field of Interest Fund: Ensures permanent support for a specific area of your interest while allowing flexibility for the future.
- Scholarship Fund: Improve the lives of students with a permanent source of higher education funding.
- Designated Fund: Provide a permanent source of income to meet the future of your designated charities.
- Donor Advised Fund: Recommend annual grants for causes you care most about without expenses and administrative burdens of running a private foundation.
- Memorial Fund: You may establish any of the above funds to honor the memory of a loved one.
Can I support an organization in Turkey through TPF through my will?
Yes. A bequest in your will or trust can direct assets to a fund or organization of your choice and can reduce your taxable estate.
Can I donate appreciated stocks?
Yes. You can achieve a greater impact by donating long-term appreciated securities. Compared to donating cash, or selling your appreciated securities and contributing the after-tax proceeds, you may be able to automatically increase your gift value and increase your tax deduction. Appreciated stock that is contributed to TPF is exempt from capital gains taxes. If you sold the
stock and used the proceeds to write a check for your gift, you would potentially be liable for capital gains tax. When you claim a charitable tax deduction for your gift, the full fair market value of the appreciated stock on the transfer date is your gift amount.
I’d like to start giving but I don’t know which organization/cause what should I do?
TPF Partner Program vets organizations in Turkey for transparency and accountability. TPF picks and funds the most effective programs to maximize impact. TPF staff is available to help you define your philanthropic goals, discuss and evaluate your giving options; and serve you and your family in the manner that suits you. Please check out the list of our partner organizations on our website at www.tpfund.org.
What is legacy giving?
Turkish Philanthropy Funds’ Legacy Society is created exclusively to recognize those who provide for TPF’s long-term social investments through a gift in their wills, trusts or estate plans. Donors are recognized publicly in TPF publications and honored at special events for their generosity unless they desire anonymity.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law for donors who are US taxpayers. Turkish Philanthropy Funds’ tax-exempt ID number is 20-8392006. Turkish Philanthropy Funds issues you a tax receipt immediately after making a donation.
What are the methods of payments?
TPF accepts a variety of gifts from appreciated stocks, and real estate to life insurance. Find TPF’s full gift acceptance policy online on www.tpfund.org.
Can I donate anonymously?
Yes. Donors who wish to make anonymous donations may do so. We require basic Information, for tax purposes, but will not disclose it publicly.
Is there any way to keep track of my donations?
Yes. We maintain a profile for donors so their contributions and reporting is easily accessible.
