The Science Academy – Bilim Akademisi – Istanbul, Turkey
The Science Academy
|Mission of Organization||
Science Academy-Istanbul was founded in November 25, 2012 by 17 former (resigned) members of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) after the government issued a decree requiring the appointment of two thirds of the membership of TÜBA by government agencies external to TÜBA. All members and former members of TÜBA properly elected prior to the decree of August 27, 2011 were invited to become members of the Science Academy. In meetings in Istanbul and Ankara on September 1 and 3, 2011, many TÜBA members expressed their resolve to make all attempts to persuade the authorities for amending the decree, and to resign if and when appointments are made or it became clear that they will be made. It was also resolved that a non-governmental Academy is desirable in any case and work was started towards establishing an independent Science Academy.
|Impact of the Organization||
During its first year the Science Academy first worked on its by-laws for electing new members. These were ratified in a General Assembly in April 2012. They can be found on our website. We have now applied these procedures to elect our first set of new members. The election process was concluded on Nov. 24, 2012 – by our first anniversary.
