Sweta

SWETA stands for Summer Workshop for English Teachers from Anatolia. 2007 was the tenth Annual SWETA workshop. This year, Cyrus Carter, Melissa Altuntas and Jennifer Sertel were the classroom teachers of SWETA. Two former RC Prep students acted as assistants throughout.

SWETA tries to target Turkish teachers from rural areas who teach English at the High School Level. Most of the teachers teach Lise Hazirlik at Anadolu lises. We aim to get teachers outside the Istanbul and Ankara areas since these teachers have at least some access to professional development. The recruitment of the teachers is done by Oxford University Press. The OUP area managers have consistently been able to successfully pinpoint the enthusiastic interested teachers in their areas who are open to new ideas and will share what they have learned with their colleagues back home.

This year SWETA had 24 teachers representing all areas of the country :Van, Isparta, Kayseri, Gaziantep, Giresun, Çankırı, Uşak, Diyabakır, to name a few. The students gave their own invaluable perspective on the activities; telling anecdotes about how the activity went in a real class and what they got out of that activity. The teachers were impressed by the level of English as well as the level of honesty and maturity of the RC prep students.
