Booming is the adjective most often used to describe Turkey these days. Ranked the 16th largest economy (and growing) in the world, the country saddled between Europe and the Middle East is looked as a sound investment and economic model for others, especially in the region. Yet, it is important to note that this Turkish economic miracle is regional, contained to Turkey’s west. What happens in Istanbul stays in Istanbul. Read more.

Primary Purpose of the Project:
TÜRGÖK prepared Turkish Language/Literature Exam study books in Braille and audio book formats to help visually impaired students prepare for the Central University Exam that will take place in June 2011. Turkish Language/Literature is one of the critical subjects in the exam and it is suitable to be translated into Braille since it does not have symbols, formulas, graphics, maps, etc, which are difficult to translate into Braille.
Needs that were addressed:
In Turkey, the only way to attend a university is through the Central University Exam. In 2010, the exam format and the content were changed. Since there is no exam preparation books in the new format specific to visually impaired students, their success rate is most likely to be low. The need for preparation books and study guides for the visually impaired has been addressed with this project.

Accomplished Outcomes:
TÜRGÖK created and distributed 135 test preparation books on the subject of Turkish Language and Literature for visually impaired students in Braille and audio to help students prepare for the Central University Exam. The books were distributed by April 2011 to identified visually impaired students who will be taking the exam in June 2011.
The project was successfully completed and with the help of TPF's funds, TURGOK was able to purchase a punching and binding machine for effective and cheaper production of Braille books in the future. TURGOK now has better resources and equipment to continue to fulfill their mission and create educational opportunities for visually disabled students.
