TPF Community Philanthropy Internship Program

Bookmark and Share

Looking for a volunteer opportunity that's fun and social, as well as great for the community?

Open to anyone and everyone who has a passion for Turkey's non-profit sector, the Community Philanthopy Internship program at TPF is a great opportunity to get involved with all aspects of TPF operations and to learn in detail about its business model. TPF interns work at the NYC office 20 to 40 hours per week. The TPF Community Philanthopy Internship Program is a unique opportunity as the intern gets to work directly with the Head of Operations, helping her with important decisions and being involved in all daily operations. The intern is treated as a co-worker with responsibilities where she/he is expected to use creativity and give input no matter what the issue at hand is. This is also a great opportunity not only to work closely with successful professionals and benefit from their experiences but also to meet new people since there will be several occasions for networking through the meetings and events during the year. The internship also gives interns a chance to become acquainted with Turkish non-profits, their people, projects and business models.

Prior experience in a non-profit organization is required. The intern should be energetic, reliable, detail oriented and organized. Interest in the main impact areas (Education, Livelihoods, and Women's Empowerment) of TPF is a plus. Language of the office will be in English however knowledge of Turkish highly useful.

If you are interested, please send a resume and cover letter including the hours that you would be available and how long you would be available to senay@tpfund.org.

Here is what our former interns had to say about their experience at TPF:

Gulsah Senol (Summer 2009-Present)

"I have done several internships at different nonprofit orgnizations but none was as challenging and as exhilarating as my internship at TPF. I think I can safely say that I have learned all I know about the nonprofit industry directly through my work at TPF. I would recommend anyone to join our family and see what a rewarding experience it is for themselves."

Gulsah joined TPF in June 2009 and has been a part of our team since then. She is curently a Senior at Macaulay Honors College at Baruch College and is double majoring in Political Science and Economics. She is also completing a certificate program in nonprofit management. Gulsah's interest in the nonprofit sector started in the Spring of 2008, when she interned at the Clinton Global Initiative division of the Clinton Foundation. She has been volunteering and staffing CGI meetings since then. Gulsah has also interned at the World of Children, a nonprofit organization dedicated to children. In addition to her internships and her demanding coursework, Gulsah is also an active member of her campus and served as the President of Turkish Students Association during the 2007-2008 Academic Year, the Secretary of American Humanics Students Association during the 2008-2009 Academic Year and currently is the Vice-President of American Humanics. She loves to travel and has studied abroad at the University of Paris, France during the summer of 2008. Gulsah speaks Turkish and French.

Eda Sevgili (Fall 2008)

"My experience at TPF as a full-time intern was fun. Not only did I get familiar with the management of a community foundation, but also had the chance to get to know the NGO world in Turkey.  I also think, this internship program is an ideal place for networking. Once you are in TPF, you are part of TPF family and Turkish American community. So, if you want to get some social work experience or do some networking during or after your undergrad, this program is a perfect start!"

Eda Sevgili joined TPF as a dedicated full-time intern in October. In summer 2006, she also interned at the Permanent Mission of Turkey to the United Nations, where she had the opportunity to attend high level meetings, conducted several researches, wrote and presented reports to the delegates. In August 2007, she completed a training session about the procedures and processes of the Istanbul Stock Exchange, where she assisted to the Director of Research and Development Branch. Her interest in civil society starts with her experience as a Coordinator of a Youth Organization of a public charity, SIDER. There, she worked as a volunteer to reduce the lack of communication among young people living in East and West. She also found an opportunity to attend a training session by Bilgi University NGO Training and Research Center and acquired a certificate. She received her Bachelor's degree in Global and International Affairs, from a joint Dual-Diploma Program between Binghamton University, one of the elite institutions in the State University of New York system, and Bogazici (Bosporus) University, one of the leading universities in Turkey.

"Interning at TPF has been a very special experience for me. I could never have predicted just how huge of an impact TPF would have on me in twelve short weeks. The projects I was assigned were challenging and valuable contributions to the team. I have learned much throughout the course of my summer. The invaluable knowledge I gained from this experience overall has and will continue to shape my professional development. Thank you!"

Hanzade, who is originally from Kutahya, Turkey first became interested in nonprofit organizations and philanthropy while taking part in a volunteer program in TEGV when she was 15, studying in Deutsche Schule, Istanbul. Following her graduation she continued her education in Koc University as an International Relations major. During her studies in college she had an opportunity to participate in Socrates Erasmus Exchange Program and spent a semester in Universita Commerciale Luigi Bocconi, Milano. After returning from Milano, she started working for Foundation for the Support of Women's Work (KEDV) and became a member of the team that coordinated Citi Group's projects. In order to understand different aspects of nonprofit investments she did an internship with Avea in the Corporate Social Responsibility division and wrote reports on project applications. In her last semester in college she interned in TUSEV and supported the office on Guidestar Project. She was in New York City for three months to complete her internships in TPF and Groots international after graduation. She recently joined Sabanci Foundation as Programs Specialist.
