Neriman and İlhan Nuraltay migrated from Romania to Turkey in 1950s. Their first days in Turkey were full of hardship. They slept under the stairs of an apartment building in Aksaray. They had difficulty finding financial means to fully support themselves. Yet, through their perseverance and hard work, they made their way to the United States. İlhan became a very successful physician. Neriman lived her dreams as a tailor. Through out their lives in the United States, they have never lost touch with their first adopted homeland, Turkey. İlhan passed away in 2007 and Neriman in 2014, but their legacy will now live forever through the charities they support in Turkey through TPF. Nuraltay family dedicated their will to causes in Turkey.
Neriman and İlhan lived the American Dream in New York. Their friends describe them as a couple full of life who loved traveling and who had immense love for humankind. Nuraltay family never forgot the difficulties they faced in the past and pledged to help others one day when they have the means.
Sadly, İlhan was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 2007. After losing her husband to cancer, Neriman did her best to make his memory live through philanthropy. In her will she left money to five charities in family’s name: Turkish Oncology Foundation, Hand-in-Hand Foundation (TSK Elele Vakfi), Foundation for Children with Leukemia, Turkish Education Foundation and Darulaceze Foundation.
TPF is honored to be the bridge between their kind gift and our partners in Turkey. We remember both İlhan and Neriman Nuraltay with gratitute.
