Organization's Mission

HISAR ANATOLIAN SUPPORT SOCIETY (HADD) is a non-profit association founded by a group of Robert College (64’) classmates in April, 2010. Its aim is to educate the young women of displaced families from rural background, in the less developed Eastern parts of Turkey, particularly with the skills necessary to improve their lives economically and socially. The activities of HADD are focused mainly in the city of Van in Turkey’s Eastern Anatolian Region where the major problems are underdevelopment, unemployment and poverty. Our objective is to help the young people in the area, to improve their problem solving abilities and social skills and enable them to make the best use of the cultural and artistic traditions of their region. Our Mission is to inform, educate and skills provide training to the young women living in the poorer suburban neighbourhoods of Eastern Anatolian cities, enabling them to generate their own income and thereby contributing to the social harmony, by providing them with venues for education and socializing.

Impact

Some of the problems HADD is dealing with include: 1. Poverty 2. Low participation of women in social and economic life 3. Young women who did not received or completed their formal education Goals: 1.Promote the education, occupation and social inclusion of young women of immigrant families in Eastern Turkey. 2. Support the young women financially and socially to continue formal education, improve their education levels and help them gain income generating skills. 3. Open new kilim workshops in the ghettos of big cities in Eastern Anatolia and increase the participation of young women in these workshops from 90 to 1000.

Van Kilim Workshop Project - “The Art Atelier”

The Problem Addressed by the Project

The founders of HADD were inspired by a documentary film by Ümit Kıvanç named “Girls and Roots”. The subject of this documentary film is a kilim workshop, educating young women of the city of Van in Eastern Anatolia, in the art of traditional kilim weaving. The girls were usually the only member working to support their crowded immigrant families, who had to resettle in Van from the nearby rural areas. Van did not provide jobs for the new migrants and was already sufferring from high unemployment. The new comers found themselves economically and socially marginalized. For the young women of these families it was particularly difficult as - having no opportunity to attend school - were stuck in their homes. Mr. Enver Özkahraman managed to provide a solution for these young women. He founded the first kilim workshop and kept it open and functioning for almost 10 years, entirely on his own through his personal efforts and dedication. The girls not only lerned skills but were able to socilize with others and earn some income in the workshop by weaving kilims. Upon watching the documentary film, Mr. Servet Harunoğlu wanted to know Mr. Özkahraman personally and was very impressed by this gentelman who was opening a door to the world for these young women. At that time – having depleted his own resources - the workshop was almost about to close.

Time Line: August 2011 - August 2012
