Film Clubs in Anatolian Cities

The Problem Addressed by the Project

Regional disparities remain a deep problem in Turkey, due to years of neglect and underinvestment, which, when coupled with increasing levels of migration, have drained the urban vitality of many of its cities. The western part of the country, particularly Istanbul, has been the main magnet of attraction both in the national and international sense, drawing the most attention, resources and interest in economic, social, and cultural terms. Anadolu Kültür remains as one of the few private cultural foundations from Istanbul explicitly engaging in projects outside of the cultural mainstream of Istanbul. Its focus is on developing community based socio-cultural transformation project in cities across Anatolia as well as fostering excellent contacts with mayors, local administrations and professionals in the cultural field.

Time Line: January 2009 - December 2009

The Goal of the Project

Anadolu Kultur, in its five years of experience, has observed that film screenings are appealing and exciting to the youth in Anatolia. The screenings not only provide means to create inter-cultural awareness but also dialogue. The project promotes film clubs at universities in four Anatolian cities: Canakkale, Antakya, Kars and Van.

The Impact of the Project

Anadolu Kultur believes that promoting film clubs in Anatolian cities, especially at the universities, could be instrumental for creating a new artistic meeting points for youth. Film clubs are platforms where youth get acquainted with various European issues and discussion. Through these activities young people talk about cinema, exchange ideas about filmmaking, and write critiques. Partners: Bogazici University Mithat Alam Film Center and Altyazi Cinema Magazine.
