Women’s Empowerment and Literacy Program in Gaziosmanpasa The Problem Addressed by the ProjectIn Turkey, over seven million adults, most of them women, are ILLITERATE. Women are the most important figures in the lives of children since they impact their children’s wellbeing for years to come. AÇEV during implementations of AÇEV’s Mother Child Education Program found out that ILLITERACY of mothers is a barrier when preparing children for school and supporting their development.
As a result, AÇEV developed the literacy acquisition program (FALP) geared toward illiterate adults in 1995, based on scientific studies and taking the phonological structure of the Turkish language into consideration. GAZIOSMANPASA in Istanbul is one of the provinces that the project is implemented with the aim of advancing functional literacy and increasing participation in societal life.| Time Line: January 2010 - April 2010 | |
The Goal of the ProjectGaziosmanpasa, which is the highest populated region of Istanbul, serves as a hub for illiterate immigrants. According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, almost 16,000 women (8%) from Gaziosmanpasa do not know how to read or write.
In its implementation, this program will focus on areas such as citizenship, human rights, and health, as well as basic literacy and arithmetic. The first stage of the literacy sessions, which is structured differently for adult learners, will consist of 120 hours of class time and is approved and certified by the Ministry of National Education. An 80 hour supplementary program is aimed at teaching participants how to use literacy as a way of accessing information and how to make reading and writing integral parts of their everyday lives. The approach combines the use of volunteer teachers who have been trained as adult educators by AÇEV and additional guidance and support from AÇEV in the form of observation and advice. AÇEV is the only NGO in Turkey which is licensed by the Ministry of National Education to offer literacy certification to adults. The Impact of the ProjectThrough this program AÇEV aims to not only impart functional literacy skills to women age 15 and older, but to also support women so that they can participate more actively in social life and become aware of the political and social issues directly affecting their lives.
