Mother Child Education Foundation (ACEV)

Organization's Mission

AÇEV's mission is to make a lasting contribution to society and to improve the quality of individual's lives through education. In its main areas of expertise, early childhood and adulte ducation, AÇEV develops and implements various training programs and projects both within Turkey and abroad.

Impact

Women and children are the most disadvantaged population segment in Turkish society, especially in rural and less developed regions and neighborhoods. AÇEV works to provide equal opportunity in education for all believing that learning is a lifelong process that must begin in early childhood and the child as well as his/her immediate caregivers must be educated and supported.

Family and Child Education Center-Alipaşa

The Problem Addressed by the Project

A most significant part of a child’s development is completed by the age of 6. Also parents play a critical role as first educator within these critical years. Investments in Early Childhood Education(ECE) reduce social and economic inequality.
However, in Turkey those who would most benefit from ECE services and mother training are those who least benefit from it.

Time Line: January 2009 - January 2012

The Goal of the Project

Alipaşa is an extremely economically disadvantaged neighborhood in the heart of Diyarbakır.
In 2003, through donations, AÇEV was able to purchase a two story building and turn it into an educational centre comprised of 3 preschool classrooms and one adult education classroom.
This center has become an integral part of the Alipaşa community, able to serve 60 preschoolers and their mothers a day. After several needs assessment studies conducted in the region AÇEV developed the programs supporting preschoolers and their families;

Preschool Education Program (PEP)
Mother Support Program (MSP)

Through PEP AÇEV aims support the cognitive and social development of the 5-6 year olds by improving his/her pre-numeracy, pre-literacy and language skills. To prepare 6-year-old children for school cognitively, linguistically and socially. To compensate for the effects of non-optimal environmental conditions and to increase children’s level of school readiness.

Through MSP AÇEV aims raise mothers’ awareness about their children’s developmental needs and support them about parent child relationships, nutrition, preventative health, hygiene and preparation for primary schooling
